Cor and I came out from the shrine room to a room that was eerily quiet. All I could see of anyone was Fashrun's gear, lying on the debris not far from the doorway. We made our way around, and it was horrible: just her bones in her gear, her body all gone, her life force sucked by the tuber things and fed to the now-stopped shrine. Cor gathered all that remained, and Jack popped up from the other room, saying that everyone else was alive, if drained. Thymelixsen and Mirashan appeared next, looking rather haggard. It was definitely time to leave. I closed the door to the shrine room as Thymelixsen sensed magic... and other than the shrines, there was nothing left. The others said that they'd killed all but one of the tuber things; that last one must have gone when Thorfold did, which was too late for Fashrun, though Jack had tried to distract it.
We got out of the tunnels, and it was almost surprising that it was still before dawn. Jack wanted to go to his temple, but the House was closer, so we went there first. The guards let us in, and we were escorted to our room. Unfortunately, not enough people were up around the House to be able to get hot water yet; we were all rather grimy.
As we settled down for a bit, I healed Thymelixsen's rib, which was the only broken bone. I wasn't able to heal the others' wounds just yet, and since there's no immanent danger, there's no need to rush. I checked Fashrun's bones, hoping against hope that there was still something left of her, but she seemed all gone to me. I'll have to bring them to Hab.
I started telling what happened in the shrine, regretting again that I was slow in figuring out what to do: that might have saved Fashrun. Cor picked up the thread when it got to the conversation with Thorfold, and heard Cor's idea that Thorfold was trying to fix the 'poison' of the rainbow things and whatever the Orem did to make that rip under the Featureless Plains. We know that the Orem controls here are linked to those there, because that rainbow thing came through the crystals to attack Thymelixsen here. And Thorfold did say that it was long ago, from 'before the gods' (though I think he was wrong about that), so definitely an issue from long before his arrival in Bo's Point eighty years ago. Of course, his solution was worse than the problem.
Thymelixsen wants to talk with the foci in the House about what to do about the lower shrine. Jack wants to tell the people at his temple what happened, and they will likely have some suggestions for what to do about the shrine. I want to see Hab, to make sure Fashrun is sent off properly, and tell her that Thorfold is truly gone now, and ask for her suggestions. And Cor wants to find Fashrun's friends to tell them what happened.
