[K152.20] somewhen beyond the Veil
Mar. 10th, 2009 10:52 pmWe discussed the plan for Jack to fly ahead as a barn swallow. Cor had him test whether going into shadow here worked, and it does. Jack flew off towards the water. There was now room in the harness Eck-Clack was wearing, so I suggested May climb in, so she wouldn't get tired as quickly, and we could trade off when I got tired.
After another two hours or so, one of the boxes beeped, and Eck-Clack gestured off to one side, that there was something moving off there. Jack? No. What's it like? Like May, not in size, but in abilities. Except some is like May, and some is not. Hrm. We debated detouring to find out what it was, and Eck-Clack and Tek Tek Turka were debating a lot, too, though later they seemed to be talking about the beings from the wood ship.
I asked more about it. It was like all of us. One or more than one? One and a sort of something else. Hrm.
In the end, Tek Tek Turka wants to go, and Eck-Clack isn't happy about it, but willing to go along, and we decided it was worth checking out.
We set off. We weren't far from one of the large tree traps when I heard some fluttering, several flying things going in and out of the tree. I could see black ots flying in and out partway up, and likely higher than I dared look, about 12 yards and higher. They weren't birdlike in their fluttering, and we talked about how to avoid them. Tek Tek Turka pointed to the ground by the tree. There was an odd sort of bleep from the box, as if it were uncertain, somehow. We detoured to avoid the trees.
As we continued on, we could hear things skittering away from us.
Ahead there were two trees where the roots came out towards each other, which seemed to be our destination.
Cor said that something like May but not might well be someone of the Hidden Lord, perhaps left from the war. Trees seemed to have bugs, so we debated going closer, but that was the destination, and the bugs didn't seem to be bothering us, though now there were hundreds of them clacking.
Then there was a large bug shape melting out of the darkness. It was a bigger bug than we'd seen before, but it was not in a fighting position, its arms folded up. Cor said we didn't want to attack. It indiated May. She went closer, and it slowly reached towards her. She let it take her and hold her. Cor tried to go with them, and it hissed. Cor insisted that he'd go with her. The bug put May down. We talked, and May decided to go. It took her up again, then backed away, and vanished.
We waited for hours. I looked through my books to see if there was a way to keep bugs away, and there was something about keeping secret insects out, but it wasn't the right thing for this situation (attempting any rites of the Father here would not have been politic).
It had been a couple of hours, and Cor was concerned. He started yelling for May. Jack heard him, and flew to us, telling us he'd run into lots of bugs, and had battled some. He'd been hurt, and I went to check him over. I sensed there was a control spirit in him, that controls via pain. I have nothing that will work to get that out of him. And I also realized that none of us should go on long solo scouting trips: there's no way someone sleeping will be able to wake up. It's lucky that Jack was turned back by the bugs, actually.
May reappeared out of nothing, and told us that there was a blessed in there, looking like a spider, but a blessed, who made herself look like a dark-haired Taal. The blessed is a secret-keeper, who came from a place destroyed by the rainbows. The blessed said her bugs won't attack May and the party now, and if they do attack later, she'd not send stronger ones if we fought back (which is good: these bugs seem plenty strong enough, given what Jack described as the effect of their bites). The blessed is also partly in charge of the tree traps.
May had a vision from where the blessed came from: everything was the same, then some split up. She was in a stone room, and there were two women held on the wall with sparkly manacles. One was middle-aged, the other one was young. May was part of what was holding them on the wall, and part of the room, and everything else. The only things that were not part of the sameness were the two women. May felt drawn to the younger one, but didn't know why. Two beings came in, wearing armor they'd grown, and they were also part of the all of everything, but split in different pieces. One said that they hadn't found the missing, so they had failed: they were still incomplete, and needed to be whole. The older woman said something about what we're looking for, and how one way was a failure. This angered one of the men, which further confused him, since he didn't know what anger was like. He hit her, which also felt odd, and confused him further. She said something about the many path, and this also confused him. The feelings of frustration and confusion grew, then the younger woman taunted the men, laughing. The older woman told her to stop, but she didn't. The more bug-like guy hit the younger one, and still both of them were confused by all the emotions. The younger woman then shed her clothes (somehow), and got one of the guys excited. He fought the other guy for her, then mated with her. The woman then put the powers from the other woman into the bugs she gestated from the mating.
The whole thing was confusing. May sai dthat the secret-keeper gave this to her because she wanted this not to vanish from the world, and there were none left from her old world. I don't know how useful it will be to keep this in the world, though.
We were all exhausted at this point, and there didn't seem to be anywhere particularly better to rest, so we made camp where we were.
